Joint Research Centres are External Research Centres which are established on the basis of specific, targeted initiatives by the Commonwealth or State Governments. They involve a number of organisations which, together with UNSW, have agreed to form a Centre in order to pursue a joint mission.

Mission statement of the centre:

To address national and global issues relating to increased demand for fresh water, water resource management, wastewater and water management, and ecosystem stress and health by applying environmental biotechnology to fill the knowledge gap that exists on the biology of engineered systems (ie bioprocesses), resulting in better translation of academic knowledge into industry applications.

Mission statement of the centre:

This centre will provide a platform to foster interdisciplinary collaborations between Australia and China to meet the challenges in the mineral, metallurgy and material industries which are of paramount importance to Australia and China. It focuses the R&D in raw material preparation, process metallurgy, material manufacturing and applications. Its collaborations include the conduct of collaborative research for developing innovative processes or products, training of young engineers and scientists, application and commercialization of research outcomes, academia and industrial linkages for knowledge and technology transfer, formulation of informative and strategic advice for the development of government policies.
