Additional Benefits & Allowances for Award Holders

A number of scholarship schemes provide additional benefits and allowances to cover a variety of costs associated with undertaking a higher degree by research. The information below outlines each of these benefits for UNSW’s main awards including the Research Training Program (RTP), University Postgraduate Award (UPA), and University International Postgraduate Award (UIPA), as well as NHMRC awards. For further information, or for alternative awards, please refer to your scholarship guidelines.

Relocation Allowance

Available under the following scholarship schemes: Domestic RTP stipend, UPA, International RTP, or UIPA. 

Recipients of the above scholarships may be entitled to a contribution to the costs associated with relocating themselves, their spouse and dependents to UNSW.

UNSW may pay a relocation allowance to scholarship holders who:

i. were living overseas or interstate at the time of applying for the scholarship; or

ii. have not studied at an institution in NSW/ACT within 12 months prior to applying for the scholarship and had to relocate to Sydney or Canberra to commence their program at UNSW

For 2018, the funding available to International recipients will be $2,000, or $1,000 for Domestic. 

The relocation allowance can only be claimed on commencement of the scholarship. 

Allowance Application Procedure

Domestic candidates: Proof of relocation must accompany the Commencement of Study Form (available on the Scholarship offer letter). The Form and proof must be emailed as per instructions on the scholarship offer letter.

Candidates should retain copies of all documents for their own records as required, as submitted documents will not be returned.

International candidates: The relocation allowance will be paid upon receipt of the Commencement of Study Form (available on the scholarship offer letter), submitted as per instructions on the scholarship offer letter.

Thesis Allowance

Available under the following scholarship schemes: Domestic RTP stipend, UPA, International RTP stipend, or UIPA 

Recipients of the above scholarships may be entitled to a contribution to the costs associated with the production of their thesis. For 2017, this contribution will be $400. 

The thesis allowance can only be claimed on submission of the thesis. 

Allowance Application Procedure

A Thesis Allowance Claim form confirming bank account details must accompany the submission of thesis. This claim form is available on the Forms, Procedures and Policies page

If the thesis is submitted electronically, applications should be lodged with the Graduate Research School on research.tem@unsw.edu.au.

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)

Available under the following scholarship schemes: International RTP, or UIPA

Recipients of the above scholarships may be entitled to a contribution towards the cost of Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the standard award duration at the single cover rate of the UNSW preferred provider (Medibank).

The OSHC allowance can only be claimed on commencement of the scholarship. 

Claims must be made within six (6) months of the commencement of the scholarship.

Allowance Application Procedure

The OSHC allowance will be paid upon receipt of the Commencement of Study Form (available on the Scholarship offer letter), submitted as per instructions on the scholarship offer letter.

Visa Processing Fee

Available under the following scholarship schemes: International RTP

Visa Charges for Australian Government International Research Training Program Scholarship (RTP) holders are waived by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) at the time of visa processing. Students need to declare to DIBP that they hold the RTP.

Candidates should note that where the visa process fees have already been charged due to circumstances beyond a student’s control, special cases may be considered by the Graduate Research School. Supporting documentation must be provided. 

The visa allowance can only be claimed on commencement of the scholarship.

Claims must be made within six (6) months of the commencement of the scholarship.

Allowance Application Procedure

Scanned copies of tax receipts (not invoices) with the amount of the visa processing charge must accompany the Commencement of Study Form (available on the scholarship offer letter). The Form and receipts must be emailed as per instructions on the scholarship offer letter.

Candidates should retain copies of all receipts for their own records as required, as submitted documents will not be returned.

NHMRC and other awards with allowances

Award holders must check the individual conditions of their awards to determine which allowances they are eligible for.

Allowance Deadlines

Claims should be made within six (6) months of the commencement of the scholarship, or (for thesis allowance) submission of thesis.

Allowance Application Procedure

Scanned copies of tax receipts (not invoices) with the supplier’s Australian Business Number (ABN) and substantiating documentation (e.g. fuel receipts can be used as evidence of relocation) must accompany the Additional Allowance Claim Form (available on the Forms, Procedures and Policies page). The Form and receipts must be emailed to the Graduate Research School.

Please note that all receipts should be submitted in the one claim. Multiple claims will not be processed.

Candidates should retain copies of all receipts for their own records as required, as receipts will not be returned.
