Additional Benefits & Allowances for Award Holders

Graduate Research School

UNSW Scholarships provide allowances for various costs.

Relocation Allowance

A relocation allowance is available to holders of an Australian Government Domestic Research Training Program Scholarship (RTP), University Postgraduate Award (UPA), Scientia PhD Scholarship and certain NHMRC or APA(I) awards, who move their place of residence to Sydney/Canberra to commence their higher degree by research. Candidates are reimbursed for these costs. Please check your individual scholarship guidelines to ensure your award covers this benefit.

Allowance Conditions

The following relocation expenditures, up to the maximum allowance limit, can be claimed:

  • Travel expenses to Sydney/Canberra from at least 100kms from the city (ie) full or partial reimbursement of costs for one way economy airfare via the most cost effective route, or a fuel allowance for one direct trip to Sydney/Canberra (for travel within Australia only) by car for the award holder, and their partner/dependants.
  • Removal expenses for moving personal items to Sydney.

Candidates cannot claim for storage, car hire, accommodation, meal costs or any other travel or moving related costs. For the purposes of relocation entitlements, a dependant is defined as a person who moves residence with the scholarship holder. For example, A partner who transfers employment to Sydney can be regarded as a dependant; a child continuing to study at the former city and not intending to live in Sydney on a permanent basis with the award holder, is not regarded as a dependant. An eligible child is a natural or adopted child of the student or their spouse, who is less than 18 years of age, or less than 25 years of age and undertaking full-time study.

Allowance Amount* is as follows.
RTP/UPA/Scientia:

  • Up to $530 for each eligible adult.
  • Up to $265 for each eligible child.
  • The maximum total relocation allowance that a student can receive is $1530

Please check the individual NHMRC or APA(I) agreement for the allowance amount.

Allowance Deadlines

Claims must be made within six (6) months of the commencement of the scholarship.

Allowance Application Procedure

Scanned copies of tax receipts (not invoices) with the supplier’s Australian Business Number (ABN) and substantiating documentation (i.e. if claiming for your partner and/or dependant/s) or evidence of travel if claiming travel by car (i.e. fuel receipts can be used as evidence of travel by car) must accompany the Additional Allowance Claim Form (available on the Forms, Procedures and Policies page). The Form and receipts must be emailed to the Graduate Research School.

Please note that all receipts should be submitted in the one claim. Multiple claims will not be processed.

Candidates should retain copies of all receipts for their own records as required, as receipts will not be returned.

Thesis Allowance

A thesis allowance is available to holders of an Australian Government Domestic Research Training Program Scholarship (RTP), University Postgraduate Award (UPA), or certain NHMRC and APA(I) awards to assist with the direct costs associated with the production of their thesis. Candidates are reimbursed for these costs. Please check your individual scholarship guidelines to ensure your award covers this benefit and see if you are eligible.

Allowance conditions

The following costs can be claimed:

  • binding, printing, printing cartridges, ink cartridges, photocopying, typing, proofreading, editing, stationery, paper costs; and,
  • for UNSW Art & Design students only: exhibition space rental and/or material costs incurred for production of final exhibition

Candidates cannot claim for purchase of computer equipment, computer software, computer peripherals or postage, taxi or courier costs for thesis submission.

The maximum thesis allowance that a student can receive is as follows:

  • $420 for a Masters thesis
  • $840 for a PhD thesis

 Please check the individual NHMRC agreement for the allowance amount.

Allowance Deadlines

Claims must be lodged within 1 year of first submission of the thesis for examination and no more than 2 years after the expiry/termination date of the scholarship.

Candidates should note that in circumstances beyond a student’s control, a waiver of this 1-year time-limit may be considered by the Graduate Research School. Supporting documentation must be provided.

Allowance Application Procedure

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)

An OSHC Allowance is available to holders of an Australian Government International Research Training Program Scholarship (RTP) or Scientia PhD Scholarship to assist with the direct costs associated with the production of their Health Cover. Candidates are reimbursed for these costs.  

Allowance conditions

The following costs* can be claimed:

 The student will be reimbursed the amount charged by their provider for the period of the RTP, to a maximum of 3.5 years, and for a Scientia, to a maximum of 4 years.  

Allowance Deadlines

Claims must be made within six (6) months of the commencement of the scholarship.

Allowance Application Procedure

Scanned copies of tax receipts (not invoices) with the duration and amount of the OSHC must accompany the Additional Allowance Claim Form (available on the Forms, Procedures and Policies page). The Form and receipts must be emailed to the Graduate Research School.

Visa Processing Fee

Visa Charges for Australian Government International Research Training Program Scholarship (RTP) holders are waived by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) at the time of visa processing. Students need to declare to DIBP that they hold the RTP.

Candidates should note that where the visa process fees have already been charged due to circumstances beyond a student’s control, special cases may be considered by the Graduate Research School. Supporting documentation must be provided. Please send your case to: international.grs@unsw.edu.au


Scientia PhD Scholarship holders will be reimbursed for visa processing fee costs*.
