Join the debate - Should Nursing Homes be Abolished?

UNSW Ageing Futures Institute is delighted to be sponsoring the Capacity Australia Global Debate – Should Nursing Homes be Abolished?

This very timely, discussion, organised by Professor Carmelle Peisah, President of Capacity Australia, and a member of UNSW Ageing Futures Institute, will examine the need and relevance of nursing homes from an international perspective.

The debate will take place against the backdrop of the current COVID-19 pandemic which has highlighted the systemic issues in the aged care sector globally, as well as the current Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety in Australia.

The debate will be Chaired by Human Rights Lawyer and UNSW Ageing Futures Institute member Professor Andrew Byrnes, with several international experts in ageing, aged care, law and social sciences arguing both sides of the question. Institute member, Professor Henry Brodaty, will take a position on the affirmative side and Institute Director Professor Kaarin Anstey will help set the scene with opening remarks alongside Royal Commission Assisting Counsel, Mr Paul Bolster and Professors Nahathai and Tinakon Wongpakaran from Chang Mai University, Thailand.
