Professor Thomas (Tommy) Wiedmann is leading the Sustainability Assessment Program at UNSW Sydney, Australia. In teaching and research, he is guided by the question on how to achieve concurrent human and planetary well-being. He has almost two decades of experiences in integrated, quantitative sustainability assessment, industrial ecology and environmental footprint analysis. Wiedmann is leading the development and application of the Industrial Ecology Virtual Laboratory (IELab), a collaborative research platform for environmentally extended multi-region input-output analysis.

Wiedmann's recent research is focusing on urban sustainability and sustainability transformations. He is particularly interested in indirect environmental and social impacts associated with production, value and supply chains of goods and services traded within and between economies. This enables quantification of indirect, virtual and embodied impacts, accounting for extended consumer and producer responsibility (Scope 3 emissions accounting for true carbon neutrality being one example). Such an extended triple bottom line perspective offers new insights to inform sustainability strategies and transformational change.

Wiedmann has coordinated a number of sustainability-related research projects funded by European and Australian Governments worth about $6m in total. In 2012, he received the Thomson Reuters Citation Award in Australia and he has been listed as Highly Cited Researcher annually since 2015.

    Research interest

    My research and teaching as Professor of sustainability research at UNSW Sydney is based on a long-standing experience in integrated sustainability assessment and environmental footprint analysis. My main research question is how to achieve concurrent human and planetary well-being. I develop and apply environmental input-output analysis as part of a holistic concept to life cycle assessment, industrial ecology and sustainable consumption and production research. I lead a national e-research infrastructure project and coordinate a number of research projects related to sustainability.
