Professor Kerry Anne Humphreys

My Expertise

Kerry Humphreys conducts behavioral research investigating when managers make effective decisions incorporating strategic performance information (including from the balanced scorecard framework and ESG information), and how new managers can learn to make better decisions using this information. Her research examines a variety of management judgments and decisions, including performance evaluation, risk management, strategy evaluation and resource allocation in dynamic business environments. Kerry's PhD research received the American Accounting Association (AAA) Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award from the Accounting, Behavior and Organizations section.

Biography

Kerry researches, teaches and designs curricula in strategic management accounting, which looks at how managers use financial and non-financial information and analyses to deliver the organisation's strategy and make effective judgments and decisions around managing performance. Kerry researches, teaches and designs curricula in strategic management accounting, which looks at how managers use financial and non-financial information and analyses to deliver the organisation's strategy and make effective judgments and decisions around managing performance. She supervises Honours and postgraduate research students, and her research investigates when managers make effective decisions incorporating strategy and performance information (including the balanced scorecard, sustainability and ESG information), and how new managers can learn to make better decisions using this information.

She publishes in leading international academic journals (ABDC A* ranked): The Accounting Review, Accounting, Organizations and Society, and the Journal of Management Accounting Research. Kerry is an Editor of Accounting and Finance, and Editorial Board member of Behavioral Research in Accounting and Accounting Horizons. Her research has received external funding from the Australian Research Council (ARC), Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and the Accounting & Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand (AFAANZ). 

Kerry serves as Director of Academic Development, and is a member of the UNSW Academic Promotions Policy and Procedure Review Committee. She has served as Director of the UNSW Business School’s Experimental Research Laboratory (BizLab), Deputy Head, School of Accounting, and (Acting) Director of Education, School of Accounting. She has received awards for research, teaching and leadership, including an Australian Learning & Teaching Council (ALTC) Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning, AFAANZ/Pearson Education Accounting/Finance Lecturer of the Year, UNSW Vice-Chancellor’s awards for teaching excellence (individual and team teaching), a UNSW Scientia Research fellowship, UNSW Business School Dean’s Emerging Leadership award, and multiple UNSW Business School awards for research and teaching. The American Accounting Association (AAA) recognized Kerry’s research with an Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award for the Accounting, Behavior and Organizations section.

Kerry earned her BCom (First class Hons; University Medal) and PhD from UNSW, and her postgraduate qualification as a Chartered Accountant with CA-ANZ. She was awarded a Fellowship of CA-ANZ (FCA) in 2020. Kerry has consulted to a variety of organizations in both the private and public sectors working with PricewaterhouseCoopers and IBM Global Business Services.
