I am currently a Senior Lecturer in the School of Physical, Environmental and Mathematical Sciences at the University of New South Wales @ADFA, where I teach both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in GIScience and human geography. I completed my PhD at the GeoVISTA Center in the Department of Geography at The Pennsylvania State University in 2004.

Teaching
I currently teach undergraduate units on  Environmental Hazards and geographic information systems/remote sensing. I also teach a portion of the first year geography curriculum focused on healthy environments/healthy people.

Research
My research has two thrusts:
(1) geographic information science, with a focus on theoretical aspects of visual representation; and
(2) human-environment interactions, particularly how humans move through the built, biophysical and social environments.

Geographic Information Science:
My current research is investigating the cognitive and perceptual processes involved in using maps, information visualizations and other forms of geospatial information. Two particular research foci at present are communicating and reasoning with uncertainty in demographic estimates, a collaboration with researchers from Colorado University and Portland State University in the U.S., and conceptualising the role that affective responses to maps may play in map reading.

I have also been involved in a long term collaboration with other researchers at UNSW Canberra developing a map-based people's history of Australia's involvement in the Vietnam War. You can have a look at our interactive map here: http://vietnam.unsw.adfa.edu.au

Human-Environment Interactions:
With colleagues at the ANU, University of Adelaide, FACHSIA, and the Western Sydney Health Service, I am investigating the health outcomes of time scarcity. In particular, I am looking at how families' time-space geographies lead to time scarcity.

I welcome inquiries from potential postgraduate students with interests in these areas.
