A major focus of our work is to devise strategies for pancreatic beta cell replacement. A major focus of our work is to devise strategies for pancreatic beta cell replacement. Beta cells are critical for the physiological control of glucose levels through the regulated secretion of Insulin. In type 1 diabetes this cell type is destroyed by autoimmune attack. We are developing therapeutic strategies to reprogtam abundant pancreatic acinar cells to replace the missing beta cells with a patient's own tissue. We envision that a cure for type 1 diabetes will require immune system modulation and effective beta cell replacement to ensure long term success.
