Elena Sitnikova, PhD, BE (Hons), CSSLP, is an academic and researcher within the Australian Centre for Cyber Security (ACCS) at the School of Engineering and Information Technology at the University of NSW Canberra at the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA), Australia. Her main research interests are in critical infrastructure protection and cyber security, quality assurance and enterprise process capability improvement. Elena currently leads the Critical Infrastructure area, carrying out research projects in cyber security in SCADA and process control systems with industry, State and Federal Government partners in Australia. She works internationally researching cyber and natural threats including the new research direction of Extreme Solar Events and EMPs on SCADA systems. Elena is among the first Australians to be certified in CSSLP - Certified Secure Software Lifecycle Professional, issued by (ISC)2 International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium, USA in 2009 and she keeps this current. From this she gained the knowledge and the concept of building security in, not adding on, within software application development lifecycles. She now applies to her research and teaching specific courses within the Master of Cyber Security and the Master of Cyber Security Operations programs at UNSW.
Elena is an award winning academic, holding an Australian Federal Government Office for Learning and Teaching (OLT) Team Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning. She is an executive member of and a Champion for the Australasian Association for Engineering Education (AAEE) and a key member and a champion of the Australian Council of Deans for Information and Communications Technology (ACDICT).
Elena also has IT industry experience working as a senior software engineer with the Motorola Australia Global Software Group. Prior to migrating to Australia, she worked for the space project Buran; the results of her research were implemented at “Energia“(The Russian Space Research Centre in Moscow, Russia).
Current Research Topics and Interests
*Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) Governance and Policy. There is currently no standard-based, large scale IoT deployment in support industrial control systems that operate within CI. This project will investigate and examine current standards and guidance for improving Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity, and develop a framework for IIoT with best practice solutions.
* Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) secure design. Driven by emergence of the IoT that adds new dimensions to cyber security issues for traditional M-2-M systems; this research aims to develop solutions to design and architecture pre-existing Critical Infrastructure systems that reflect the new phenomenon of IoT and its required interoperability and diverse architectures.
* IoT in autonomous systems. This research project will look at the adaptive behavioural of Industrial IoT systems and how these systems be re-programmed to change their behaviours automatically through specific data or interactions with other networking systems. For example, rapid response to cyber-threats.
* IoT-enabled systems complexity and interconnectivity. This project aims to develop innovative cyber security approaches to architectures, interfaces and integration of networks, sensors, control and computation for rapid design and deployment of heterogeneous Industrial IoT systems.
* Secure software applications, mobility and BYO devices. This project will research in software development principles in a new era of Secure Software applications. The concept of building “security in” through the life cycle development that increases software operability, security and safety in critical operations and IoT-enabled systems.
* Ecosystem cyber security . This research considers new technological advancements of IoT and creates opportunities to end-to-end ecosystem security and resiliency for industrial control systems, where the decisions can be made automatically in a distributed manner. The research project can include streams of transworthiness and resiliency. This project will be suitable for a potential student with specific skills in systems engineering and substantial years of experience in the field.
Some possible areas of industry applications of these research projects (but not limited to) are: Industrial Control Systems, Mission Critical Systems, Space Systems; and Socio-technical Systems.
