Biography

Dr Maarit Laaksonen is a Senior Lecturer in Data Science at the School of Mathematics and Statistics. Dr Maarit Laaksonen is a Senior Lecturer in Data Science at the School of Mathematics and Statistics. She is a biostatistician with 15 years international experience in the field of epidemiology and public health. Her main research focus is on the development of novel disease burden measures and their application to health data to inform priorities for reducing burden of disease. She currently holds a Cancer Institute NSW Career Development Fellowship and leads research evaluating the determinants of the future burden of cancer with the aim of improving cancer prevention, early detection and outcomes.

Dr Laaksonen has carried out research on several diseases, including cancer, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and mental health disorders, and a wide range of risk factors related to lifestyle, environment, and genes. At UNSW, she has developed expertise in the analysis of large linked primary and secondary health datasets aimed to inform prevention, treatment and costs of diseases.
