Research

I am a Senior Postdoctoral Scientist in the School of Medical Sciences at the University of New South Wales, based at the Prince of Wales Hospital. My overall research aim is to determine the importance of respiratory diseases in vulnerable populations, including children with chronic respiratory diseases. This includes projects on investigating the role of respiratory viruses in exacerbation of chronic airway diseases including asthma and cystic fibrosis (CF), new point-of-care testing for respiratory viruses, a state-wide surveillance for enteroviruses, understanding transmission modes of respiratory viruses including SARS-CoV-2, and developing novel sampling and diagnostic methods for respiratory viruses (http://www.virologyresearch.unsw.edu.au/programs/respiratory/).

I am currently working on studies involving investigating novel treatments for SARS-CoV-2, and respiratory infection point-of-care testing (through the UNSW Center for Research Excellence Integrated Systems for Epidemic Response (ISER)), and running a state-wide surveillance study into outbreaks of enterovirus.

Teaching

I have 15 years of experience teaching at the tertiary level. I give lectures every year on influenza and vaccines at UNSW and have been an invited guest lecturer in infectious diseases including Influenza, Emerging Viruses and General Virology at University of Sydney and Macquarie University. I am a casual academic at the University of Technology Sydney, since 2013 and coordinate the Professional Experiences in Biomedical Science Program.

I have several years of experience tutoring students in Microbiology, and have tutored medical students in viral hepatitis. I also present my current research every year to students visiting the virology research laboratory as part of the Viruses and Diseases subject UNSW. I have completed the Foundations of University Learning and Teaching (FULT) UNSW and achieved a distinction in Learning to Teach Online (a MOOC through Coursera).

I enjoy mentoring up and coming scientists, and I partner with a local High School through the CSIRO STEM Professionals in Schools Program. I have supervised 4 SOMS Honours students, one Medicine Independent Learning Project student and one SOMS PhD student to completion.

Member of Franklin Women and Australian Society for Microbiology.
