My research interests include the lived experience of urban housing, housing affordability, equity and design at the building and precinct scale. I have a background in design, psychology and urban sociology, and prior to joining City Futures in 2015, I worked in industry for construction organisations in Auckland, London and Sydney. My PhD, obtained from UNSW Sydney, investigated social connection in large apartment complexes, interviewing residents, managers and local government staff to identify residents’ needs and desires and the potential for design, management and policy changes to better support these.

My Qualifications

  • PhD in the Built Environment (UNSW Sydney, Australia)
  • MPhil in the Built Environment (UNSW Sydney, Australia)
  • GDip in Psychology (Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand)
  • BA in Design (Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand)

My Research Activities

I have contributed to a number of projects on strata and urban living within the City Futures Research Centre, including most recently investigations into defects in strata, the size of the strata sector in Australia and New Zealand and a large-scale survey of residents and workers in Green Square and Ashmore urban renewal areas. In the housing affordability and equity arena, I've contributed to research on decreasing homelessness and rapid policy responses to private rental and homelessness during the Covid-19 crisis.
