Dr Zohair Abu-Shaban has a strong background in Communication and Signal Processing formed at top world universities, and an international research experience shaped in the UK, Australia, Luxembourg, Sweden, and Spain. His active research collaboration network spans different countries: USA, Canada, Sweden, Spain, and Australia.

Zohair is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of New South Wales, Australia. He obtained a PhD degree from the Australian National University (ANU) in 2018, and his thesis title was "Towards the Next Generation of Location-Aware Communications". He also holds an MSc (Distinction - top of cohort) in Communications and Signal Processing from Imperial College London, UK, in 2010.

During his PhD, he was a Visiting Research Scholar at the Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona, Spain, and Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden.

Prior to his PhD, he was an Early-Stage Researcher at the University of Luxembourg, from January 2012 to May 2014, pursuing research in collaboration with SES S.A, funded by the National Research Fund, Luxembourg (FNR).  During this stint, he also worked on a project with the European Space Agency (ESA). The theme of this research was signal processing and receiver design for satellite communications.

Throughout his career, he received several scholarships and awards including the Hani Qaddumi Scholarship, a US Fulbright Scholarship, the Department Prize for Outstanding Achievement from Imperial College London and the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Action (MSCA) research fellowship from the European Commission. His PhD thesis received the Best Thesis Prize from the Australian Communication Theory Workshop 2019, Australia's largest conference for researchers in communication, signal processing, coding and information theory.

Besides his research activities, Zohair has a wide experience in higher education (lecturing and tutoring) and has been teaching in Australia and Overseas, courses that include satellite communications, wireless communications, digital communications, signal and systems, DSP, radar technologies, probability theory and stochastic processes, and electrical and electronic circuits.

Zohair is the Chair for Young Professionals on the Executive Committee of the IEEE ACT Section, and the Canberra Representative on the Early Career Academic Network Executive Committee (ECAN EC).

My research interests are in the areas of:
  • 5G Location-Aware Communications
  • Beamforming and Localization
  • Millimetre-Wave Communications
  • Vehicles-to-Vehicle Communications.
  • Satellite Communications
  • Signal Processing for Communications
  • Physical Layer Security
  • Software-Defined Radio

A list of my publications can be viewed on Google Scholar.

I am interested in supervising PhD students in the above areas. PhD scholarships ($35,000 per year) are available for high-achieving students (with H1/High Distinction in UG and/or Masters by Research) in engineering, mathematics or relevant sciences.

If you are interested, complete the self-assessment through https://selfassessment.research.unsw.edu.au/ and send me its results at zohair.abushaban@unsw.edu.au. I will then contact you if I believe it is feasible.
