Mr Yalemzewod Assefa Gelaw

Biography

Dr gelaw is epidemiology and biostatistics trainee with a special interest in data management, analysis and interpretation of epidemiological and clinical studies. He has also interest in methods in infectious disease modelling, child health and longitudinal data. Dr gelaw is epidemiology and biostatistics trainee with a special interest in data management, analysis and interpretation of epidemiological and clinical studies. He has also interest in methods in infectious disease modelling, child health and longitudinal data. Infectious disease, child health service and global health data analysis methods and causal inference in low-income countries are his focus of research.

He earned his PhD in June 2020 from The University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia. In Septemeber 2019, he joined Metro North Public Health Unit, Queensland Health to advance his community health research in communicable disease and epidemic response for a six-month contract. In March 2020, he joined UNSW Sydney to advance his research and data analysis skill using large survey data linked with health service records. He has more than ten years’ experience working in the Ministry of Health, Ethiopia as a senior environmental health officer, Epidemiologist at Queensland State Health, as well as holding an academic position at the University of Gondar and a research position at the University of Queensland, Australia. He has robust epidemiology, biostatistics and public health background with considerable research experience in low-income countries.

PhD  The University of Queensland, Australia (2020). 


My Awards

  • University of Queensland Internation Scholarship: I have received a PhD stipend ($66,000 AUD) and received a travel award ($3,600 AUD)

  • Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation ASTMH 2019 Annual Meeting Travel Award: airfares, conference registration and $800 USD pocket money

  • EPIC scholarship to attend “An Introduction to Infectious Disease Modelling” from the National Institute for General Medical Sciences, USA.

  •  Thomas McIntyre Scholarship: Research travel award for tuberculosis researcher ($3,000 AUD) from UQ Graduate School


My Research Activities

Dr Gelaw is currently leading a research project “the Pathways of Care Longitudinal Study”, which involves the analysis of longitudinal data to examine the socio-developmental trajectories of children in during and after Out-of-Home Care (OOHC) service.
