Researcher

Professor John Pimanda

My Expertise

Applying genome-wide, single-cell technologies to investigate blood stem cell development in the embryo, blood stem cell maintenance and differentiation, transformation of healthy blood stem cells into dysplastic and leukemic cells, and the emergence of drug resistance during chemotherapy.

We are a molecular and cell biology laboratory with a research focus in blood development and in leukemia. We study genome-wide changes in healthy and leukemic blood stem cells at single cell resolution. We use this knowledge to improve our understanding and management of blood stem disorders such as myelodysplasia (MDS) and acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). Our research interest lies in identifying critical components of the hematopoietic transcriptional network and how it governs stemness. We explore how this network is perturbed in mutant blood stem cells and the impact of mutations on clonal dominance and maintenance of leukaemia. We also investigate the role of stromal and immune cells in the development of blood stem cells in the embryo and the maintenance of leukemic cells in patients.
