PRSS Conference Travel Funds
Graduate Research School
Applications for conferences to be held in 2017 are now open, and will be processed in order of receipt with payments. Applications will close 1 November 2017.
The Postgraduate Research Student Support (PRSS) Scheme assists candidates with travel costs associated with presenting their research – paper/poster/exhibition – at approved international conferences. The scheme is designed to supplement support provided by supervisors, schools and faculties rather than be the sole course of travel support for this purpose. For that reason, candidates may be asked to apply for PRSS funding prior to applying for school and faculty schemes.
PRSS Features and Eligibility
A flat rate fee ($2300 in 2017) is awarded to applicants provided they satisfy the criteria and the conference is approved by the supervisor and PGC.
Candidates must have already had a paper/poster/exhibition accepted by an approved international conference to be held in 2017, as confirmed by the supervisor and PGC, before applying. There will be no need to attach anything to the form – confirmation by the supervisor and PGC will be sufficient.
Payments will be processed by the GRS in order of receipt of the completed form. Please note that payment can only be made to Australian financial institutions. Conferences being held in the calendar year will be prioritised and processed until funds are exhausted. However, candidates can apply for conferences in future years, once their paper has been accepted, with payments commencing from the new budget year in January. The flat rate for each calendar year is determined by December 1 the previous year.
If the approved conference cannot be attended, the funds may be used for another conference provided it is approved by the supervisor and PGC. There is no need to return the funds unless an approved conference is not attended by the time of program completion.
The Annual Progress Review (APR) form will be amended to include a record of international conference participation and how financed – whether PRSS or another source.
Only PhD and other doctoral candidates will be eligible to apply for PRSS funding. Masters candidates transferring to a doctoral program will be eligible as soon as the transfer has been approved.
PRSS funding can be paid only once in a candidature. Many supervisors, schools and faculties have their own travel support schemes so please check whether there are alternative sources of funding available to you.
PRSS funding can only be used for international travel (excluding New Zealand). Domestic conferences and those held in New Zealand, while often international in nature, are more accessible and therefore more easily supported by the candidates themselves or supported by supervisors, schools and faculties.
