Mr Amani Kasherwa

Amani Kasherwa is a PhD candidate and casual academic in Social Work in the School of Social Sciences, Faculty of Arts Design and Architecture, UNSW. His thesis project, entitled 'Negotiating survival overseas: exploring the help-seeking processes and support patterns of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) survivors in African communities with refugee backgrounds in New South Wales, NSW, Australia" is under the supervision of Associate Professor Caroline Lenette and Professor Emerita Elizabeth Fernandez.

His broader research interests include children and family issues in forced displacement and post-conflict situations, child protection, child sexual abuse, children in foster care, social support, refugee health services, gender, and peacebuilding. Amani has published on ritualistic child sexual abuse, foster care, peacebuilding, and psychosocial well-being, and has worked as an academic and social worker in the DRC before joining UNSW. Amani received his M.A in Social Sector Planning and Management from Makerere University in 2018 in Kampala Uganda and a B.A in Peace and Development Studies at Université Evangélique en Afrique, UEA Bukavu DRC in 2013. Amani's teaching interests are in the Methods of social work (Case Work, Group Work, and Community Organization), and in children and family issues.
