The aim of the project is to reveal the mechanisms of the stabilisation of lifted jet flames in hot oxidiser. Such flames occur in several important combustion devices, notably diesel engines. When fuel is delivered into an environment of oxidiser at high velocity, the flame may be detached, or 'lifted' from the delivery nozzle. In diesel engines, lift-off is a crucial factor determining harmful emissions. However, the fundamental phenomenology of the stabilisation of lifted flames is not yet understood. Using detailed direct numerical simulations, we aim to discover how lifted flames are stabilised in hot oxidiser and determine how the stabilisation mechanism depends on key fluid-dynamic, thermodynamic, and chemical kinetic parameters.
