Professor Richard Bryan Lock

My Expertise

My main research question is to understand the molecular basis of drug resistance in paediatric acute leukaemia and devise and test new treatments to improve outcome. I have developed what is recognised on an international scale as the most clinically relevant experimental model to investigate paediatric acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). My research has also contributed to a greater understanding of mechanisms of glucocorticoid resistance in paediatric ALL. I am the only overseas Principal Investigator ever to be involved in the US NCI-funded Paediatric Preclinical Testing Consortium (PPTC) and have received continuous NCI funding for 21 years. My international leadership role in preclinical drug testing in acute leukaemias is evident from my research having initiated several clinical trials for the treatment of relapsed/refractory paediatric and adult acute leukaemia.

Biography

Research Interests:
In the field of cancer the major focus is in defining molecular mechanisms of drug resistance in relapsed childhood leukaemia. New experimental models of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia have been developed that will be used to delineate mechanisms of programmed cell death (apoptosis) and investigate novel biological characteristics of the disease. In addition, these experimental models will be used to test novel...view more
