I am Associate Professor in Journalism with the School of the Arts and Media at UNSW. My research interests include discursive news values analysis (DNVA), text-image relations, multimodality, visual storytelling and the role of picture galleries in online news reporting. I have also worked on research projects investigating the portrayal of women in sports by the Australian Media (with former JMRC at UNSW) and investigating visual storytelling techniques at the ABC.
My current research investigates the visual representation of diversity in early childhood picture books published in Australia (with Dr Ping Tian, University of Sydney).
I recently completed an ARC DECRA project investigating contemporary practices in photojournalism in the Australian news media in the wake of massive layoffs among press photographers. This included the ways in which citizens and organisations outside of journalism are re-shaping and re-defining photojournalistic practice through their engagement with the digital economy.
In 2010, I completed a PhD on image-text relations in print news media with the Department of Linguistics at the University of Sydney. In 2013, I was a Visiting Fellow at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, University of Oxford, UK. I am also a former press photographer.
You can learn more about DNVA, my DECRA Project and other research publications at my research websites listed under 'Related Links' at the end of this page.
