About the Research Strategy and Partnerships Office (RSPO)

The Research Strategy and Partnerships Office (RSPO) team works closely with external partners, UNSW Faculties, research teams and researchers to identify research funding opportunities and support the development of collaborations, partnerships and applications for funding from all domestic and international sources.

We support UNSW’s 2025 strategic objectives of academic excellence, social engagement and global impact which is achieved by high quality research outcomes through collaboration with external partners.

Working with Partners

The RSPO works extensively with external industry, government and other funding organisations to initiate and strengthen strategic research partnerships delivering high quality and mutually beneficial outcomes for our partners and UNSW.

We are responsible for the identification, establishment and effective management of Australian and international research partnerships with industry, governments, and affiliated institutions.

Our approach is underpinned by a “partnership pathway” model that outlines the opportunities for engagement from student scholarships through to larger investments over time which may include consulting and contract research, NSW government tech vouchers, Commonwealth government Innovation Connections, CRC projects, ARC linkage projects, NHMRC partnership projects, technology commercialisation and sponsorship of UNSW Chairs and Research Centres.

Working with UNSW Researchers

The team works in close consultation and collaboration with UNSW Innovations, the Grants Management Office and other relevant sections of the Research Division and broader University to offer UNSW researchers support for realising their research ambitions and to strengthen the University’s research performance and profile in line with the objectives of the UNSW 2025 strategic plan.

The RSPO works with UNSW researchers at all stages of their careers to provide strategic advice on:

  • competitive research grants

  • contract and commissioned research/tenders

  • identifying new partners and negotiating the pathway to productive partnerships

  • developing and strengthening domestic and international research partnerships

  • research centres
