Dr Thompson completed a 6-year Royal Australasian College of Surgeons accredited training program in all aspects of general urology. He then completed a post-graduate fellowship in robotic and open uro-oncology at University College London Hospital, then was appointed at UCLH as a consultant robotic and open uro- oncologic surgeon.

In 2018, he accepted an offer to return to Sydney as a staff specialist Uro-Oncologist at St George Hospital, a HMO/ VMO St Vincents Hospital/ Clinic in order to provide state of the art cancer care to the Australian community, and to continue cutting edge cancer research in partnership with the Garvan Institute/ Kinghorn Cancer Centre, St George Cancer Care Centre Research Group, APCRC, ANZUP and UNSW.
