Biography

Melonie Bayl-Smith is Associate Professor of Architecture - Practice in the School of Architecture, UNSW FADA School of the Built Environment. Melonie Bayl-Smith is Associate Professor of Architecture - Practice in the School of Architecture, UNSW FADA School of the Built Environment. She is also Director and Nominated Architect of Bijl Architecture, an award-winning Sydney based practice, and has been a practitioner in the field of architecture for almost 25 years.  Beyond practice, Melonie is well known for her extensive involvement in architectural education, the development of  professional standards, and the registration of architects. She was previously Adjunct Professor at the UTS School of Architecture (2012-19) where she taught design, construction and professional practice from 2007-2019. Her deep interest and research in the areas of architectural education and professional identity formation contributed to her appointment as the NSW APE Convenor and to the AACA National Visiting Panel for the accreditation of architecture programs in Australia and New Zealand. In recognition of her contributions to architectural education, Melonie was elevated to Life Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects in late 2020. 

Melonie is presently serving as the Academic Member of the NSW Architects Registration Board (2021-23) having previously served on the ARB as an Elected Member from 2017-20. Melonie also recently completed a two-year term on the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) National Committee for Gender Equity, serving as Co-Chair across 2019-20. Over the past twenty years she has served on many professional committees and juries, including the AIA NSW Chapter Council and the 2008 State Architecture Awards jury.
