Steve and his lab investigate how what we see, communicate, and achieve are shaped by attention, emotion, and how we find meaning. Grounded in cognitive psychology, his research has strong links to social psychology, clinical psychology, and neuroscience. Specific topics explored in his lab include how attention and emotion shape conscious experience (e.g., inattentional blindness & emotion-induced blindness), emotion regulation, curiosity, and effort.

Steve has received multiple awards for his teaching and mentoring and is passionate about fostering public understanding of psychological science and its real-world implications. In 2021, he co-authored the textbook Cognition from Oxford University Press, which received the Most Promising New Textbook Award from the Textbook and Academic Authors Association.
