My Grants

2018-2021 $293,380 ARC Linkage Project, Chief Investigator: Art in Conflict: Transforming contemporary art at Australian War Memorial, partnering with the Australian War Memorial and the National Trust of NSW, with academic team A/Prof Kit Messham-Muir (lead CI, Curtin), Prof Charles Green (University of Melbourne) and Prof Ana Carden-Coyne (University of Manchester). Overall project budget of $1,226,506.

My Research Activities

I am a Chief Investigator on a current Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Project project (2018-2021), ‘Art in Conflict: Transforming contemporary art at Australian War Memorial’.  This project is in partnership with the Australian War Memorial (AWM), Canberra and SH Ervin Gallery, Sydney (National Trust NSW), as well as international team of researchers. The project continues my research into art and conflict, investigating conflicts and compromises arising within official schemes for the Australian War Memorial’s commissioning contemporary war art since 2007, shining a critical light upon the AWM’s important yet under-researched national collection of contemporary war art.  Project outcomes include international symposiums (Sydney 2019, London 2019, Los Angeles 2019, Perth 2021), a special issue of the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Art (2019) and a curated exhibition of contemporary Australian war art (2021).  A key output will be a book titled Images of War in Contemporary Art: Terror and Conflict in the Mass Media, co-authored with Kit Messham-Muir to be published by Bloomsbury in September 2021.
