I am a Senior Research Fellow at the Australian Research Centre for Cancer Survivorship. My research interests are focused on characterizing chronic health outcomes among survivors of cancer and understanding the simultaneous contributions of both cancer therapies and established risk factors to increased risk for chronic health conditions. Prior to starting at the Australian Research Centre for Cancer Survivorship, I worked for over 15 years in the Department of Epidemiology and Cancer Control at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis TN to advance understanding of long-term health outcomes faced by childhood cancer survivors.

My Research Activities

I have studied a broad range of chronic disease outcomes among survivors including second cancers, frailty, physical performance and health behaviours; however, a key focus of my research is adverse cardiometabolic and endocrine outcomes among survivors. This is because although these phenotypes can significantly increase a cancer survivor’s risk for serious chronic diseases, reduce quality of life, and adversely influence the aging trajectory, cardiometabolic and endocrine phenotypes are often modifiable or can be ameliorated through appropriate therapies.

I have experience using a range of diverse methodologies to characterise adverse outcomes among cancer survivors, such as registries and data linkage, medical records, research evaluations, and questionnaires. My research is published in journals such as Journal of Clinical Oncology, Journal of the National Cancer Institutes, Cancer, Clinical Cancer Research and Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers and Prevention. The ultimate goal in my program of research is to utilize what I, and others, have learnt about chronic disease outcomes among cancer survivors and translate these insights into practical strategies to reduce the burden of these conditions among survivors.
