A/Prof Carcel is a Heart Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow and Paul Kroner Innovation Award recipient and an NHMRC Emerging Leader Fellowship. She is a neurologist and the Head of the Brain Health Program at The George Institute for Global Health. She is a conjoint associate professor at University of New South Wales. She was selected as a World Heart Federation (WHF) Emerging Leader and a Stroke Society of Australasia Emerging Stroke Clinician and Scientist. Since 2014, relative to opportunity, she has published over 95 articles and presented at several national and international conferences. She has collectively been awarded over $4.5M in grants. She is lead investigator on a grant from the World Heart Federation evaluating essential acute stroke care in low-resource settings in Nigeria and Peru. She is co-lead the analysis of an NHMRC funded project (Big Data Study on CV disease APP1447430) that utilises linked data to investigate sex disparities in management of coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke. She is an editorial board member of Stroke, the leading journal in this field, and an Associate Editor for Cerebrovascular Diseases Journal and Frontiers in Global Women's Health.
