Dr Purcell is an Adjunct Senior Lecturer with the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at UNSW. He works on the practical application of machine learning to remote sensing and disaster management. He is also Chief Scientist at BolgiaTen, where he applies machine learning, earth observation and data-intensive methods to real-world challenges including maritime situational awareness and environmental risk. BolgiaTen builds trustworthy AI solutions for diverse partners including ESA, the UK Space Agency and TM Forum and NTT DATA, moving technology from research into deployment across the full technology readiness scale.

Before joining UNSW, Dr Purcell spent 18 years investigating the physics of the interstellar medium and led the data-processing teams of several large surveys of star-formation and cosmic magnetism.
