Dr Emmanuel A Flores-Johnson is a Senior Structural Modeller at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) and an Adjunct Senior Lecturer at the School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Faculty of Engineering at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). He investigates the performance of advanced structural materials under extreme conditions for applications in the nuclear industry and non-nuclear energy-generation systems using numerical modelling.

Expertise

Emmanuel has extensive experience developing finite element simulations of non-linear material behaviour, including plasticity, damage and fracture mechanics, impact, and shock behaviour. He has worked with various engineering materials and structures, including composites, metal alloys, polymers, concrete and bioinspired materials. Additionally, Emmanuel has worked on international multi-disciplinary collaborations, industry-oriented and defence projects requiring numerical modelling and experimental testing expertise.

Qualifications

Emmanuel is an Engineering Physicist with an MSc in Polymer Materials. He received a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Manchester in 2009. He worked as a postdoctoral fellow at ANSTO (2010-2012) and the School of Civil Engineering at The University of Sydney (2012-2015). Emmanuel worked as a Research Scientist at the Materials Unit at Centro de Investigacion Cientifica de Yucatan (Mexico) from 2015 to 2021 before joining ANSTO as a Senior Structural Modeller in October 2021 and UNSW as an adjunct Senior Lecturer in January 2022.
