Since 2021, James has been a conjoint associate lecturer with the School of Clinical Medicine, UNSW Medicine and Health (St Vincent's Clinical Campus), conducting bedside tutorials, clinical skills sessions, mock exam trials and exam assessing for Phase 1 to 3 students.

James is also himself actively engaged with academic research independently of his work as a junior medical officer, in the form of publications, conference posters and oral presentations, for the sake of furthering his development as an early career researcher with a passion for expanding the current state of medical knowledge to improve patient care. He has a special interest in the fields of dermatology, oncology, pharmacotherapy and immunology, and has actively sought to impart this onto his peers via Grand Rounds presentations and JMO teaching at St Vincent's Hospital.
