Marta is an epidemiologist with experience working with neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). Her work spans clinical trials, epidemiological surveys, and public health interventions across low- and middle-income countries.
Following undergraduate studies in Portugal and France, Marta obtained her MSc in Medical Parasitology at the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (IHMT), Lisbon, conducting fieldwork in Côte d’Ivoire as part of a health education project aimed at reducing soil-transmitted helminths and Schistosoma mansoni infections in schoolchildren. She then completed her PhD in Epidemiology at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH), focusing on improving treatments for soil-transmitted helminthiases through randomized controlled trials and epidemiological surveys.
After her PhD, Marta transitioned to a Project Associate role at the Swiss TPH, supporting large-scale public health projects in low- and middle-income countries such as Uganda, Côte d’Ivoire and Nepal.
Marta joined the Kirby Institute at UNSW in 2024 as a postdoctoral researcher in the Neglected Tropical Diseases research group. She is currently coordinating a cluster-randomized trial in Angola comparing the impact of MDA with moxidectin versus MDA with ivermectin for the control of onchocerciasis and other NTDs.
