Project commencement: 2020
Summary: The inflammatory bowel diseases, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, are common conditions that cause relapsing and remitting inflammation of the intestine. These are associated with poor bone health and fracture risk. There are no clear clinical guidelines about screening for osteoporosis in IBD patients.
The aims of this project are:
    1. To determine the association between baseline IBD type, activity and bone loss, over and above known risk factors and potential interactions.
    2. To determine the role of inflammation on bone loss in both Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
    3. To develop a predictive model for bone loss based on baseline characteristics, inflammatory and disease activity markers.
This is a pilot study where patients attending the St. Vincent’s hospital IBD clinic will be invited to participate in a 1-year prospective pilot study. Clinical data will be collected at study entry and 6-monthly thereafter. Anthropometric measurements, bone turnover markers, inflammatory factors will be measured along with serial bone mineral density.
Findings from this study will provide clinical guidelines for monitoring and prevention of bone loss in patients with inflammatory bowel disease.
