I am an academic clinician based at The George Institute for Global Health and the Prince of Wales Hospital, Sydney. I lead a program of research focusing on improving outcomes and treatment options for people with chronic kidney disease (CKD), which is a long-term condition where the kidneys gradually lose function over time. My research program focuses on using innovative trial designs and cohort studies to identify new therapies for people with kidney disease and translate research into clinical practice.

I work 2 days a week as a nephrologist at Prince of Wales Hospital where I lead the dialysis unit and a resistant hypertension clinic. 


My Grants

  1. NHMRC Clinical Trials and Cohort studies - The Chronic kidney disease Adaptive Platform Trial Investigating Various Agents for Therapeutic Effect (CAPTIVATE); CIA, $6,665,744, 2023. I lead this trial and co-chair the trial steering committee.
  2. MRFF Respiratory Medicine Clinical Trials Research on COVID-19 – To investigate whether angiotensin receptor blockers could reduce severe acute respiratory distress in patients with COVID-19: the CLARITY trial CIG, $1,406,587, 2020. Detailed above in Research, Large Multinational Clinical Trials section. I was the study physician and co-study director for this trial.
  3. MRFF Ideas Grant – Safety, effectiveness of care and resource use among Australian hospitals (SAFER hospitals) CIE, $1,084,271, 2021. I have provided methodology and content expertise.
  4. NSW OHMR Biospecimen Grant – To establish the Glomerular Disease Registry and Biobank, a resource for NSW Health. CIA, $150,000 2020. I lead all aspects of this project.
  5. RACP Research Establishment Fellowship, CIA, $50,000 2020
  6. MRFF TRIP Fellowship - To drive and lead the reducing the burden of dialysis catheter complications - a national approach trial. $179,118, 2018. This funding supported my salary for my work on the REDUCCTION trial.
  7. South-Eastern Sydney Local Health District, The Inspiring Ideas Challenge funding to implement the eAlerts for AKI project across POWH, $143,717, 2018. I led the funding application, project design and implementation for this project detailed above in the Translation research section.

My Awards

2021 Winner of the Kidney Health Australia Clinical Science Prize, for the best clinical science presentation at the national nephrology meeting (REDUCCTION trial)

 

UNSW Values in Action award for Diversity in 2022 and was a member of the ELEVATE team that won the UNSW award for ‘Heroes in Action’ in 2022.

My current focus in to implementing the first platform clinical trial within nephrology to test and identify new agents and the best combinations to improve the therapeutic armamentarium for people with kidney disease.

Currently supervising

I currently supervise a clinical nurse completing a PhD and a nephrologist doing a PhD. I have also supervised Masters and ILP students.


My Engagement

I facilitate and lead the Kidney Health Consumer Panel at The George Institute for Global Health which has enabled the Renal Division to embed the consumer voice into all our research. 

I am the deputy chair and Chair Elect of the Australia and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant Registry (ANZDATA) Advisory Committee. ANZDATA is the ANZ clinical quality registry for people receiving renal replacement therapy and was established in 1963.


My Teaching

I work 2 days a week at Prince of Wales Hospital and teach medical students in clinical nephrology.
