Stephen is an adjunct Associate Professor at the Centre for Social Research in Health, UNSW Sydney. With multidisciplinary training in human geography, sociology and anthropology (PhD, MA, BA Hons), he is a senior research leader with 21 years’ consultancy, academic and not-for-profit sector experience addressing health / social inequities among the world’s most underserved and excluded peoples. He has international experience in South-East Asia (India, Nepal), Western Pacific (Australia, Indonesia, PNG, Fiji), African (Nigeria, Rwanda, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe) and European (UK, France) Regions, and has led a diverse program of work across health (HIV; sexual and maternal health; neglected tropical diseases; health systems and services) and social (gender; sexuality; social exclusion) issues. He has deep technical expertise in:

  • rigorous qualitative research and evaluation, with specific skills in innovative qualitative, ethnographic and participatory methods that amplify the experiences of excluded peoples and engage them in strengthening health and social programs and services;
  • building partner capabilities, with design and delivery of >30 courses with international and national partners;
  • collaborative / partnership working approaches with community members and small CBOs, through to health services, national governments and international development institutions.
