Dr Wenkai Chang is a Research Associate in the School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia. He received his B.Eng. (First Class Honours) in Mechanical Engineering from RMIT University in 2018 and his Ph.D. from UNSW in 2023. His fundamental research focuses on advanced fibre composite technologies for engineering applications in extreme environments, with particular expertise in polymer nano-toughening and multiscale modelling of composite materials and structures. As an early-career researcher, he has produced 30+ research outputs with high quality and impact: 100% of his journal publications are in top 10% journals, and 83% publications are in top 5% journals by percentile (SciVal).
His industry-engaged research integrates nano-engineered advanced carbon fibre composite manufacturing, mechanical design, computational modelling, digital twins, and experimental characterisations, supporting the development of lightweight structures for renewable energy, advanced manufacturing, and aerospace industries. Project and translation summaries are available at UNSW and CSIRO research profiles. Recently, his research has contributed to the development of lightweight all-composite vessels for liquid-hydrogen storage and transport at cryogenic temperatures, with superior damage tolerance under extreme temperatures while meeting stringent leak-tightness standards.
