Zoë Veness is a contemporary jewellery artist and design educator.

Zoë Veness is a contemporary jewellery artist and design educator.

She has a background in classical ballet and design, graduating with a Diploma of Dance from the Australian Ballet School in Naarm (Melbourne), followed by a Bachelor of Design, Master of Design (Research) and Doctorate of Philosophy from UNSW Art & Design in Gadigal (Sydney). 

Her practice-based research in contemporary jewellery uses experimental making methods to explore aesthetics of time and notions of movement, materiality and place. Her work has received winning prizes for the Contemporary Wearables '23 Biennial Jewellery Award Exhibition and the National Contemporary Jewellery Award and acquisitions in public collections at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, the National Gallery of Australia, and the Art Gallery of South Australia. 

She has produced ten solo exhibitions including Still Point at Gallery Funaki (2024), The Stream of Time at Woollahra Gallery (2022), New Terrain in an Old World at Craft + Design Canberra (2017), Infinite Fold at JamFactory (2009) and Mathematical Beauty at Australian Design Centre (2006).

Her curatorial projects include Wayfaring at Studio XL-XS for Radiant Pavilion Naarm/Melbourne Contemporary Jewellery and Object Biennial (2019), and Remanence at Domain House in nipaluna (Hobart) for Ten Days on the Island in Tasmania (2017).

She has participated in over 70 national and international group exhibitions including the ITAMI International Jewellery Exhibition in Japan (2015), Australian Design Centre’s national touring exhibition Made/Worn: Contemporary Australian Jewellery (2020-2023) and Vestige at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (2023-2024). She was artist-in-residence at Arthur Boyd's Bundanon in 2010 and at the Edinburgh College of Art in 2006. Her work can be viewed at zoeveness.com

Zoë supervises Masters and PhD students in the areas of contemporary craft, contemporary jewellery, jewellery history, object design and textiles design.

She is currently Senior Lecturer and Deputy Head of School (Design) at UNSW Art & Design. Previously, Zoë was Studio Coordinator of Object and 3D Design at the University of Tasmania, School of Creative Arts and Media in nipaluna (Hobart).
