Dr. Chushuang Chen is a Clinical Imaging Fellow at the Sydney Brain Centre, UNSW.
Dr. Chen began her career as a neurologist in China, caring for patients with acute stroke. That clinical experience inspired her to pursue a PhD in neuroimaging at the University of Newcastle, Australia, where Dr Chen focused on CT perfusion and its potential to personalise treatment decisions. Dr Chen’s research has been published in leading peer-reviewed journals in the stroke field, including The Lancet-Neurology, Neurology, and Stroke.
As the Lead Imaging Analyst at UNSW's Sydney Brain Centre, Dr Chen coordinates the INSPIRE global stroke imaging registry, a network of hospitals worldwide that encompasses thousands of patients. Dr Chen also leads imaging analysis for multiple international clinical stroke trials, providing centralised imaging endpoint assessment to support primary trial outcomes. This infrastructure allows the research team to test imaging biomarkers at scale and implement findings directly into international clinical trials.
My Grants
Developing the Australia-Korea Advanced Neuroimaging Training Program and Collaboration, Australia-Korea Foundation 2023
AI-powered clinical decision assistance for acute stroke, Cooperative Research Centres Projects 2022
My Research Activities
Research Impact: Dr Chen has contributed as an imaging core lab member to landmark phase III trials, including TASTE, TASTE-A, and TWIST, all published in The Lancet Neurology. As Lead Researcher on a Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) Project, Dr Chen is helping to develop an AI-powered clinical decision support system for acute stroke, working alongside senior researchers and industrial partners to translate research into practice.
International Collaboration: As International Coordinator of the INSPIRE global stroke imaging registry, Dr Chen works closely with partners across five continents to advance stroke imaging research. Dr Chen has been awarded the Australia-Korea Foundation Grant (Lead Investigator) to establish the Australia-Korea Advanced Neuroimaging Training Program, creating opportunities for cross-border knowledge exchange.
Research Translation: Dr Chen’s work on CT perfusion thresholds and ischaemic core volume has been adopted into imaging core laboratory methodologies for multiple international trials. Through the CRC-P project, Dr Chen collaborates with industry partners to develop an AI decision support tool for acute stroke triage and treatment decisions.
