Dr Karen Hutchinson is a research fellow at the School of Population Health, University of New South Wales, an honorary conjoint scholar with the Australian Institute of Health Innovation, Macquarie University and Central Coast Local Health District and an affiliate of the Central Coast Research Institute for Integrated Care. She is a physiotherapist with many years of clinical experience supporting people living with complex neurological conditions, including MND. Her clinical and research interests focus on understanding and improving individual and family carer lived experiences and that of healthcare, living with complex neurological conditions, particularly Motor Neurone Disease. Her research areas include implementation science and practice, co-design, service mapping, implementation and evaluation of integrated models of health care specific to individuals and families living with chronic and complex conditions. She is a physiotherapist with many years of clinical experience in neurological rehabilitation in a community setting. Dr Hutchinson is collaborating on a range of national and NSW based research studies. She is on a range of research committees related to developing MND national guidelines, implementation science education, carers' knowledge exchange and conference scientific committees. 

Dr Hutchinson is currently on several committees including the MND Clinical Care Collective Committee, Two MND Guideline Development Committees - Australian MND Knowledge Translation, Dissemination, Implementation and Evaluation Committee and Australian MND Clinical and Content Advisory Group- the Australian Institute of Health Innovation, Implementation Science Interest Group, the International Conference for Integrated Care Scientific Committee and the Carers Knowledge Exchange Research Advisory Committee.


My Research Activities

Dr Hutchinson is currently coordinating two national MND research studies funded by FightMND, Bridging the Health Equity Gap for Australians with MND: Co-designing Solutions with the MND Community and Optimising the Impact of the MND Care Coordinator Model in Australia. She is also involved in other research projects, including NIV and MND, MND Decision-Making Tools, MND Cough and Secretion Management (SCOPE), MyED - improving emergency department experiences for five cohorts: disability, aged, mental health, First Nations and CALD communities- and Exploring fathers’ experiences and perspectives of caring for children with medical complexity.                                                                                                                                                                                                      Dr Hutchinson is currently on several committees including the MND Clinical Care Collective Committee, Two MND Guideline Development Committees - Australian MND Knowledge Translation, Dissemination, Implementation and Evaluation Committee and Australian MND Clinical and Content Advisory Group- the Australian Institute of Health Innovation, Implementation Science Interest Group, the International Conference for Integrated Care Scientific Committee and the Carers Knowledge Exchange Research Advisory Committee.
