Biography

Eric Papas is Emeritus Professor in the School of Optometry and Vision Science at the University of New South Wales in Sydney Australia. He has spent much of his career in research related to the ocular surface and contact lenses and was formerly Executive Director of R&D at the Brien Holden Vision Institute. Eric Papas is Emeritus Professor in the School of Optometry and Vision Science at the University of New South Wales in Sydney Australia. He has spent much of his career in research related to the ocular surface and contact lenses and was formerly Executive Director of R&D at the Brien Holden Vision Institute. Known as one of the inventors of silicone hydrogels, he also discovered the link between limbal hyperaemia and oxygen. He has been a member of several TFOS workshops including DEWS II, Meibomian gland dysfunction and contact lens discomfort, for which he chaired the Management sub-committee. His published works number over 100 refereed articles and book chapters, as well as 12 patents. He serves as Associate Editor for Contact Lens & Anterior Eye and Clinical & Experimental Optometry and is an Editorial Board member of Eye & Contact Lens. He is a recipient of the British Contact Lens Association Medal, the Charles F. Prentice Medal (see link below) and the Max Schapero Award from the American Academy of Optometry and has been recognized by Contact Lens Spectrum as one of the 30 most influential people in the field of contact lenses.
