Anushka is a Professor of Medicine, UNSW Sydney and a cardiologist at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, Australia. She undertook her medical training at the University of Queensland, with subsequent postgraduate research degrees from Harvard University and the University of Sydney.

As the Chief Scientist (global) of the George Institute for Global Health, she has a key role in developing and supporting global strategic initiatives across the organisation. Her personal research interests focus on developing innovative solutions for delivering affordable and effective cardiovascular care in the community and in acute care hospital settings.

Anushka currently leads research projects relating to these interests in Australia, China and India. She is supported by a Senior Research Fellowship from the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).

My Research Activities

Principal Investigator (2012 to present): Large rural health services intervention programs in India and Indonesia.

Principal Investigator (2010 to present): Program of research aimed at reducing the incidence of type 2 diabetes among women with gestational diabetes.

Principal Investigator (2006 to present): Program of research encompassing development, implementation and evaluation of electronic decision support for improving management of vascular risk and other chronic conditions.

Principal Investigator (2004 to present): Program of studies evaluating the role of fixed-dose combination therapy (“polypills”) for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.

Principal Investigator (2003 to present): Clinical pathways in the management of acute coronary syndromes in China (CPACS) – Phase 1 (prospective survey of 3000 patients from 50 hospitals) published; Phase 2 (4 year implementation program in 75 hospitals) commenced in 2007.

Chief Investigator and Executive Committee member (2006 to 2015): Kanyini Vascular Collaboration – indigenous health in Australia. Leading audits of vascular risk management in Aboriginal Medical Services and evaluation of a polypill-based strategy for vascular disease prevention.

Study Director and Steering Committee member (2001 to 2015): ADVANCE (Action in Diabetes and Vascular Disease). Randomised trial of intensive blood pressure lowering and glucose control in 11,140 individuals with type 2 diabetes – blood pressure arm completed and reported in September 2007; glucose lowering arm completed and reported in June 2008. Director of the International Coordinating Centre for ADVANCE-ON (long-term follow-up of surviving participants) commenced 2009 with follow-up until 2014. Completed and major findings published.

Investigator (Jan 2002 to 2010): Asia-Pacific Cohort Studies Collaboration (APCSC) – individual participant data overview of cohort studies in the Asia-Pacific region. Completed and major findings published.

Investigator and Coordinator (1999 to 2002): PCAT (Primary Coronary Angioplasty versus Thrombolysis) Collaboration. Individual patient data overview of randomised trials comparing primary coronary angioplasty and thrombolytic therapy for acute myocardial infarction. Completed and major findings published.

Investigator (1999 to 2006): FIELD (Fenofibrate Intervention and Event Lowering in Diabetes) Vascular Substudy. Effect of comicronised fenofibrate on carotid intima-media thickness and vascular reactivity in individuals with type 2 diabetes. Completed and major findings published.
