Biography
Dr Althea Gibson is a Lecturer in the School of Law, Society and Criminology in the Faculty of Law & Justice. Dr Althea Gibson is a Lecturer in the School of Law, Society and Criminology in the Faculty of Law & Justice. Althea has a background in criminal law, having worked as a prosecutor at the NSW Office of Director of Public Prosecutions, as well as extensive experience working on statutory and ad hoc inquiries into Commonwealth and state/territory legal and policy issues. As a legal officer at the Australian Law Reform Commission, Althea worked on inquiries into sentencing federal offenders, privacy laws, sedition laws, secrecy laws, royal commissions, and family violence. Althea was also a senior researcher on the 2019 Family is Culture Independent Review of Aboriginal Children and Young People in Out-of-Home Care, as well as a senior researcher on a 2023 evaluation of the NSW Co-located Caseworker Program for Corrective Services NSW.
Althea’s areas of research include evidence law, sentencing law, policing, visual surveillance technologies, the intersection of the criminal justice and child protection systems, women in prison, and state responses to domestic and family violence. She currently teaches Court Process, Evidence and Proof and Issues in Policing at UNSW Sydney.
Althea is available for supervision in her areas of interest.
My Awards
Althea won the UTS Chancellor's Award for the most outstanding PhD in 2017 for her thesis, On the face of it: CCTV images, recognition evidence and criminal prosecutions in NSW.
