I am a medically trained early-career epidemiologist currently working in the Centre for Big Data Research in Health at UNSW. I completed a DPhil in Population Health from the University of Oxford and I have an MSc in Epidemiology degree from Karolinska Institute, Sweden. I also studied medicine in the top-ranked medical school (Dhaka Medical College) in Bangladesh and also received a Master of Public Health degree. Furthermore, I received advanced training in diabetes research from the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD), genetic epidemiology from the University of Bristol, and prevention strategies for non-communicable diseases from University of Oxford. I am an elected Fellow of the UK Royal Society for Public Health.

I have researched different chronic diseases (cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, obesity, and respiratory comorbidity) using electronically linked large-scale routine healthcare data from Australia, UK, and Sweden.

I am building an independent body of large-scale, population-based research projects to inform improvements in health care, health, and quality of life in Australian and global populations. I am currently working on several projects focusing on various health outcomes after cardiac events and procedures in older Australian adults. My research also focuses on using linked administrative data to address important gaps in health system research. Additionally, my research aims to reduce disability and premature death in low- and middle-income countries through collaboration across multiple disciplines and with other scientists around the world.

My Research Activities

My research is focused on generating real-world evidence on early outcomes after major cardiac events and procedures, which in turn will help improving patients' health and quality of life, and optimizing healthcare utilization. Using various linked administrative data in Australia, I am currently investigating the drivers of adverse health outcomes (e.g. readmissions and mortality) after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. I am also examining the full benefits of intensive Phase 1 cardiac rehabilitation via a standardized clinical pathway following cardiac procedures.

My Research Supervision

Areas of supervision

I am interested in projects using large-scale routinely collected big data and advanced epidemiological analytic techniques to generate real-world evidence on cardiovascular health, aging, and health service research.

My Teaching

My teaching interests combine the areas of epidemiology and statistics to enable students to conduct and interpret research studies in important areas of population health.

I am the co-convener of the “Statistical Foundations of Health Data Science” course in the Master of Science in Health Data Science programme offered by the Centre for Big Data Research in Health at UNSW. I am also teaching in two other courses of the same programme: “Context of Health Data Science” and “Statistical Modelling II.”
