Dr. Nguyen is a Research Associate at UNSW Canberra working on a Defense trailblazer project, contributes to a development of  an edge-AI computer vision model for real-time object detection on Unmanned Surface Vessels (USVs).

Previously, Tran served as Lead Robotics Researcher on a DARPA-funded project developing benchmarks to assess the ethical readiness of autonomous systems in defence contexts, a Trailblazer for Recycling and Clean Energy funded project, and contributed to an ARC Discovery project using bio-inspired vision to advance UAV navigation in unstructured environments.

Tran completed his PhD at the University of South Australia under Professor Javaan Chahl, where his research focused on thermal imaging for UAV navigation in low-light and degraded visual conditions. He also gained industry experience at Lockheed Martin Australia, contributing to a large-scale defence program bridging academic research and real-world deployment.
