I have joined UNSW in June 2026 as a Martin Green Fellow while on leave from the University of Delaware where I was Chair of the Department of Geography and Spatial Sciences. I also serve as the lead for critical minerals at the United Nations University. books include Soil to Foil: Aluminum and the Quest for Industrial Sustainability (Columbia University Press, 2023); Earthly Order: How Natural Laws Define Human Life (Oxford University Press, 2022); Treasures of the Earth: Need, Greed and a Sustainable Future (Yale University Press); Environmental Diplomacy (with L. Susskind, Oxford Univ. Press); Islam and Education: Conflict and Conformity in Pakistan’s Madrassas (Oxford University Press); and numerous anthologies. received his doctorate in Environmental Planning from MIT, a Master’s degree in Environmental Studies from Yale University and Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry (summa cum laude) from Tufts University.  My research areas can be classified as follows.
