I have a MSc in Medical Biology from Linköping University, Sweden, and a PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the University of South Australia, Adelaide. I'm a Senior Lecturer and Head of Physiology teaching with a research focus on sensory neuroscience, in particular auditory neuroscience.
I have a broad skillset and extensive knowledge in integrated cellular and systems electrophysiology, particularly in biophysical analysis of recombinant protein expression in neurons and evoked potential electrophysiology analysis of sensory circuits. This is complemented by expertise in transcriptomic analysis of gene regulation in response to physiological stimuli (auditory) and site-specific regulation of gene expression. I'm a co-inventor on a patent filing which is based on the discovery of purinergic hearing adaptation, a physiological response to moderate noise, which enables prediction of vulnerability to noise-induced hearing loss. This study is supported by a hearing diagnostics industry partner and by an international clinical study funded under the NHMRC Ideas grant scheme. I'm also a CI on two other category I funding grants (NHMRC and Australia's Economic Accelerator Seed grant) which supports two projects using Bionic-array Directed Gene Electrotransfer (BaDGE®) for treating focal brain disorders and wet age-related macular degeneration.
I teach extensively across the UNSW Medicine and Science programs in the subject of Physiology and Neuroscience as an Education-focussed academic. I have a Graduate Certificate in University Learning and Teaching from UNSW Sydney and in 2021 I was awarded the Advanced Higher Education Fellowship. In 2022 I won the School of Biomedical Sciences Teacher of the Year award and in 2023 I won the Faculty of Medicine & Health Educator of the Year award, Educational Excellence award and the Heroes award (Elevate Team). I have supervised or co-supervised 3 ILP students and 7 Honours students and am currently co-supervising a Neuroscience Honours student and supervising a PhD student.
I was the inaugural Chair of the UNSW Early Career Academic Network Executive Committee (ECAN-EC) and I'm the NSW Coordinator of the Australian Brain Bee Challenge since 2017. I'm currently the Co-lead of the Faculty of Medicine & Health Gender Equity group.
