Professor Ken Hillman is the Professor of Intensive Care at the School of Clinical Medicine, UNSW Medicine and Health, South West Sydney Clinical Campuses, Discipline of Critical Care, University of New South Wales Sydney, the Foundation Director of the Simpson Centre for Health Services Research, UNSW and the Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research. His main interest is in Health Services Research – developing and evaluating new and innovative ways of practising health care.
Ken Hillman is internationally recognised as a pioneer in the introduction of the Medical Emergency Team which recognises and responds to seriously ill hospital patients early in their deterioration, which has been adopted as standard practice in most Australian hospitals and many hospitals around the world. His research involves working closely with Government, Policy, Local Health Districts and hospitals in order to develop, implement and evaluate new and innovative health systems. He is closely involved with undergraduate and postgraduate education. He is also a passionate advocate of improving the management of end of life care, especially in the elderly frail.
He has approximately 213 peer-reviewed publications; 67 chapters in textbooks; co-authored an intensive care textbook; co-edited several textbooks; and written two books – Vital Signs: Stories from Intensive Care and A Good Life to the End. He has received over $27 million in grants.
