Peter Neal is an Education Focused lecturer and Academic Governance Coordinator with UNSW Chemical Engineering. He has been teaching undergraduate and postgraduate engineering students for more than 10 years, and has a key focus on developing his students’ capacity in design, enquiry, and professional skills. As the first Education Focused academic in the School of Chemical Engineering and as a PVCESE Education Focused Champion, he works to develop the educational capacity of his colleagues in his School, the Faculty of Engineering and across UNSW.
Peter also has more than 15 years’ experience researching the economics of low emission and waste-to-x systems. His research examines the way different economic conditions, design choices and site characteristics affect project economics and design choices. He has consulted with government and industry bodies on CCS economics in Australia, Ireland, South-East Asia and Canada. He has also contributed to studies with APEC, ASPI and EPRI. He has lectured on CCS Economics, CO2 capture and CO2 transport at various international short-courses and workshops.
Peter holds BE(Hons) and PhD in Chemical Engineering from UNSW. With capabilities in process modelling, Peter helped develop whey protein concentrate production models for Dairy Australia (2002-2004). This lead to postdoctoral work (2004-2010) with the Cooperative Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Technologies (now CO2CRC Ltd), ultimately becoming co-leader of the CO2CRC Economics Project (2010-2014). As an Associate Lecturer with UNSW Petroleum Engineering (2010-2016), Peter taught engineering design, petroleum economics and natural gas engineering. He was also appointed Deputy Head of School (External Relations) and the Faculty Advisor to the UNSW Chapter of the Society of Petroleum Engineers. In 2016, Peter joined UNSW Chemical Engineering as an Education Focused Lecturer in Process Engineering.
My Research Activities
Peter's primary research area is economics of low emission and waste-to-x systems. His research examines the way different economic conditions, design choices and site characteristics affect project economics and design choices. With more than a decade's experience researching carbon capture and storage, his key interests are the economics of improving CO2 injectivity, defining CO2 storage capacity, as well as the design and development of CO2 pipeline networks. He also has interests in the processing and creation of value-added products from industrial and municipal waste streams.
