Dr Anir Upadhyay is trained as an Architect and Urban Planner. He has a PhD degree in Sustainable Design from the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning at the University of Sydney. Anir’s research mainly interrogates real-world problems related to sustainability and energy efficiency in the built environment. His research explores fundamental issues of sustainable built environment at design and post-occupancy stages by using simple design tools and analysing big data sets. Anir developed a new framework, Environmental Quality of Life, to evaluate neighbourhood sustainability using perceived neighbourhood satisfaction together with objective environmental quality. Anir is now involved in a CRCLCL research project ‘Validating and improving the BASIX energy assessment tool for low-carbon dwellings’ which reviews NSW government’s one of the most important planning tools, the Building Sustainability Index (BASIX). Anir received early career research grants in 2016 and 2017 from the UNSW Built Environment to develop climate data analysis software for built-environment professionals. His project addresses the underlying issues of climate data analysis/ presentation for built environment professionals to explore local climate data from a designer’s perspective. Anir is a co-inventor of ysense wireless environmental sensor and Enviro-energy dashboard which inform energy consumption and indoor environmental quality in real-time.
