Dr. Gong is a Senior Research Fellow at the Microbiome Research Centre, St George Hospital and St George & Sutherland Clinical School, UNSW, investigating the role of gut microbiome in gastrointestinal diseases, especially the immuno-pathogenesis of obesity-related liver diseases such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, and liver cancer. The extensive projects utilise multi-omics techniques including metagenomics, proteomics and metabolomics to analyse samples from clinical cohorts and animal models.

Before joining Microbiome Research Centre, Dr. Gong completed his PhD in Microbiology and Immunology at UNSW, and worked as a Research Fellow at ARC Centre of Excellence in Structural and Functional Microbial Genomics, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Monash University, where he investigated the role of autophagy in stem cell differentiation and host-pathogen interaction, especially host autophagic and innate immune responses against infection of human pathogens such as Helicobacter pylori, Burkholderia pseudomallei, Mycobacterium tuberculosis and malaria parasite.
