My Expertise
I am an expert in modern European history and politics, with a particular focus on modern France. I have particular expertise in the history of ideas since the eighteenth century, especially the history of social, economic, and political thought, as well as the general history of philosophy in the modern era. This includes specialist knowledge about particular thinkers (including Thomas Hobbes, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Nicolas de Condorcet, Henri Saint-Simon, Auguste Comte, and Emile Durkheim), as well as particular events and strands of thought - the Enlightenment, the French Revolution, modern republican thought, early socialism, the intellectual foundations of the modern nation state, and the origins of modern ideas of rights, political representation, and democratic government. I also have a special interest in the intersection between modern political and religious thought.
