Christy Newman (they/she) is Associate Professor at the UNSW Centre for Social Research in Health and Associate Dean Engagement and Impact for UNSW Arts, Design and Architecture. 

Christy is a leading social researcher of health, sexuality and gender, with a particular focus on HIV prevention and care, sexual and reproductive health, and LGBTQ+ health and wellbeing.

Christy Newman (they/she) is Associate Professor at the UNSW Centre for Social Research in Health and Associate Dean Engagement and Impact for UNSW Arts, Design and Architecture. 

Christy is a leading social researcher of health, sexuality and gender, with a particular focus on HIV prevention and care, sexual and reproductive health, and LGBTQ+ health and wellbeing.

Christy holds expertise in the application of social theory and participatory methods to understand the lived experience of diverse communities and the professionals who care and advocate for them, particularly sexuality and gender diverse communities and those living with the impacts of HIV and viral hepatitis stigma. 

As a collaborative, community-based researcher, they have also had the opportunity to work across the intersecting fields of mental health, Aboriginal health, harm reduction, cancer prevention, disability studies, violence prevention, child and family wellbeing, and gender and sexuality studies.

They have authored >100 peer reviewed publications, received >20 research grants totalling almost $6 million, and regularly contributed research-informed perspectives to media, professional and community discussions of diverse families, relationships and identities. Christy is a past Editor in Chief of Health Sociology Review, and led a recent special issue exploring social perspectives on trans health.
